Found-footage sci-fi thriller ‘Chronicle’ sequel confirmed

Anyone who was fortunate enough to stumble upon the cult-classic Chronicle back in 2012 no doubt still experiences flashbulb memories of the unexpected fan-favourite in waiting. Talk of a sequel to the found-footage supernatural sci-fi thriller has been doing the rounds for so long, it’s a topic that’s been long-since relegated to folklore, however over the weekend it became fact, with the original films producer confirming that a sequel is indeed in the works.

At this point in time, a specific release date is probably asking too much of the production, but in a recent interview, John Davis confirmed that on account of the films massive success, much of which came after-the-fact via streaming and VOD, round 2 was a no-brainer and already work is being put into the story.

The first entry in the series followed three friends, two of which were brought to life by none other than Michael B. Jordan and Dane DeHaan, who stumbled upon a relic from another world which imparted onto them telekinetic powers. Embracing their new found skills much like any teenagers would, with reckless, but fun abandon, the film takes a dark turn, as one of the group decides to use his great power with little to no responsibility, wreaking havoc on his local surroundings. Davis has explained a new premise for the sequel, which will be set 10 years on from the original.

“We’re working on Chronicle 2 right now, and I think it’s going to be great. We’re working on it at Fox (20th Century Studios),” he shared. “We’re going to tell it from the female point of view… These are young women just finishing college, they are empowered, and this is their journey. I mean, what a new and interesting story you can tell there.”

“It will have been ten years since the event happened in Seattle, and a lot of it’s going to deal with fake news and real news and cover-ups. More interestingly, it’s the next generation getting these powers that are corruptive.”

Though the film did experience a “huge afterlife in syndication” according to Davis, upon release it was also met with tremendous approval. He explained to Forbes, “Chronicle was literally the best return on investment, any of my movies ever made,” he said. Chronicle we did for $12 million, and it grossed $126.64 million worldwide
