The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Movie Link And Zelda Actors Announced

In what might be the strangest cast reveal to date, Nintendo has officially announced its lead actors for the live-action Legend of Zelda film adaptation.

The news came from Nintendo‘s official X (formerly known as Twitter) account, revealing that Bo Bragason will play Zelda, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link. Nintendo director Shigeru Miyamoto went on to say that he’s “very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen”.

Nintendo has further confirmed that The Legend of Zelda movie is set to hit cinemas on May 7, 2027.

The reveal is classic Nintendo – who could forget the infamous Super Mario Bros. voice cast reveal back in 2022, where we learned that Chris Pratt would be the voice of gaming’s most iconic character?

While both Bragason and Ainsworth may seem like unfamiliar talent, they’ve actually racked up an impressive list of credits. You may recognise Bragason from her work in Disney+’s Renegade Nell and The Radley. She has even earned a video game film credit, appearing as the face of a young Lunafreya in Final Fantasy XV’s tie-in film, Kingsglaive.

Ainsworth also has a solid number of credits to his name, appearing in several Netflix titles, including The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Sandman, and serving as the voice of Pinocchio in Disney’s 2022 live-action adaptation.

So far, outside of the casting, details about the film remain unknown. It’s unclear whether the film will adapt one of the many games from The Legend of Zelda series or look to do its own thing. We also know that the screenplay is being written by Derek Connolly, known for his work on Jurassic World. The film will also be directed by Wes Ball, known for directing the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Given the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s no surprise Nintendo is looking to work on even more video game adaptations. Earlier this week, we even saw Nintendo and Universal lodge a trademark for a potential Donkey Kong film. While this doesn’t confirm if a movie is in the works, it does raise some eyebrows, for sure.

Regardless, I’m glad to see Nintendo using some fresh talent for this one. Whether this indicates the video game company are anticipating future adaptations remains to be seen, however it wouldn’t be surprising.
