Deftones dedicated their performance of ‘Entombed’ on Friday at their Vancouver show to former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds, who passed away last week.

Deftones have kicked off their North American tour on Friday in support of their latest album private music, which was released last week.

At the show, the band performed their song ‘Entombed’ from their 2012 album Koi No Yokan, a track they haven’t performed live since 2017. Singer Chino Moreno would share that they were performing the track in tribute to the late former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds.

Hinds tragically passed away last week after a car collided with his Harley-Davidson motorcycle late Wednesday night. Days before his passing, the guitarist had shared on Instagram that he had been kicked out of Mastodon.

Deftones emerged in the alt-metal scene of the early 2000s, alongside Mastodon, and had previously gone on tour together, most notably in 2010 for the BlackDiamondSkye tour with Alice in Chains.

Mastodon’s drummer, Brann Dailor, would pay tribute to their former band member at their Alaska State Fair show in Palmer on Friday.

“We loved him so, so, so very much. And we had the ups and downs of a 25-year relationship, you know what I mean? It’s not always perfect, it’s not always amazing, but we were brothers to the end,” the drummer shared.

“I don’t know. We’re just at a loss for words. We’re absolutely devastated and crushed to lose him and to be able to never have him back again. But you guys made it OK for us to come on stage and do this tonight. So that was for fucking Brent, OK? Thank you guys so much.”

He concluded: “Thank you for helping us get through that one, it was fucking tough for us. But you guys are fucking amazing, so thank you.” You can see Brann’s full tribute here.
