Deftones’ latest album private music has debuted at number five on Billboard’s 200 chart after selling 87,000 units.
Deftones are back in full force with private music, marking their first album in over five years.
In the time since, the band has had a massive resurgence with a younger audience, thanks to platforms like TikTok, which saw their songs, such as ‘Entombed’, ‘Cherry Waves’, and ‘Sextape’, go viral.
Bands like HEALTH also threw fuel on the fire with their slow, industrial-sounding cover of ‘Be Quiet (and Drive)‘, which has become a live show staple in recent years.
Well, all that time spent cooking up a new album while a new and eager fan base gathered has paid off. Released on August 22nd via Reprise Records, private music has debuted at the number five spot on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, tallying 87,000 equivalent album units, with 66,000 album sales comprising that figure.
This officially makes private music launch Deftones’ best-selling week to date by units. The band’s previous full-length album, Ohms, released in 2020, also reached the number five spot on Billboard’s Top 200 chart; however, it had sold only 49,000 equivalent album units.
That’s not where the wins end, however. Their lead single ‘My Mind is A Mountain‘ has found itself being the band’s first number 1 hit on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. In fact, it’s Deftones’ first track to be a leader on any Billboard airplay chart, surpassing ‘Change [In The House of Flies]’, ‘Tempest’, and ‘Ohms’.
Deftones have just started their tour, playing new tracks from the album on tour, including ‘My Mind is A Mountain’, ‘Milk of the Madonna‘, and ‘Infinite Source’.
The band would pay tribute to Brent Hinds at their Vancouver show the other day, dedicating their performance of the 2012 track ‘Entombed’ to the late Mastodon guitarist.
