Rockstar says GTA 6 will be “the largest game launch in history,” eight months before its planned release date.
Rockstar hasn’t been shy about how big it expects GTA 6 to be. In a new job listing for a lead software engineer, the studio flat-out describes the upcoming release as “the largest game launch in history.” The post, spotted by The GTA Base on X, lays out the scale of expectations:
“With the continued growth of Grand Theft Auto Online and the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6, the successful candidate will lead both the evolution and operation of the data platform supporting what will be the largest game launch in history, ensuring it scales to deliver an exceptional experience for millions of players worldwide.”
That’s a bold call for a game that doesn’t release for another eight months, but it’s not exactly unfounded. GTA 5 is widely considered one of the most profitable entertainment products ever, while Grand Theft Auto Online alone reportedly generates around half a billion dollars annually. The hype train for GTA 6 has been well and truly one for the ages for years – with the trailer, release date, and then subsequent trailer and release delay announcement all netting millions of views from fans.
Still, Rockstar’s confidence doesn’t quite line up with recent comments from its parent company. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly stressed the dangers of overconfidence, saying just last month that he was “running scared” and that “arrogance is the enemy of continued success.” Whether Rockstar’s phrasing is corporate hype or something more, it certainly reads differently in that context.
The expectations around GTA 6 are already immense. After more than a decade since the last mainline entry, leaks, rumours, and the record-breaking trailer views have only fueled anticipation. Whether or not it ends up being the biggest launch ever, Rockstar is already positioning it that way, and with millions of players ready to show up day one, there’s little reason to doubt them.
GTA 6 is set to release on May 26, 2026.
