Ill Niño took over Sydney’s Liberty Hall last Friday, transforming the tightly packed venue into a intimate show of blistering fury – here are the photos from the night.
Ill Niño made their return to Sydney for the first time since 2017, taking over Liberty Hall for a night of nu-metal goodness.
The band was initially set to be supported by California rock group Adema; however, days before the show, Adema had to pull out due to a medical emergency. In their stead, the Sydney crowd were greeted with melodic death group Naugrim and deathcore band Harroway.
The venue was a bit smaller, but that didn’t detract from the energy of the room. Fans were still more than eager to throw down to the blistering chugfest taking place that night.
Starting their set with the powerful ‘If You Still Hate Me’, drummer and founding member Dave Chavarri led the charge. Since performing last in Australia, Ill Niño has undergone some fairly significant lineup changes, with a new vocalist and guitarists joining the group. Naturally, Chavarri was the star of the show, leading the band and the audience with his iconic Latin-infused grooves.
That’s not to say the new members were shy, however. Vocalist Tommy Roulette III, who joined the band back earlier this year, found himself in the crowd, holding fans and screaming songs back to them.
Both Jes De Hoyos and Sal Dominguez faithfully played the group’s original compositions, while finding space to make their own contributions known. The multi-year gap between tours might have contributed to this, but alongside a new, revitalised band, it felt like hearing those songs again for the first time.
The bands’ set hit like a train, with each track flowing into one another with a pronounced fury before ending as abruptly as it started. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait another eight years to catch the band yet again.
