Maggie Gyllenhaal Puts A New Spin On Frankenstein With The Bride!

Share

Man, it’s turning into a bumper year for Frankenstein fans.

We’re excited for The Bride! Almost as excited as that exclamation point would have you believe, but that’s part of the title. You know, like Them! or That Thing You Do! only with more bodily dismemberment and spitting in the face of God.

The Bride! Trailer

What’s the plot?

Set in 1930s Chicago, The Bride! sees Frankenstein’s monster hit up mad scientist Dr. Euphronius for a mate, having grown weary of the loneliness that so often attends being a stitched-together pile of offal. The good doctor promptly resurrects a murdered woman, which leads to “…romance, police interest and radical social change.” Fair enough.

Looking at the trailer, it seems we’re getting a kind of gangster-gothic take on the old horror warhorse, all chiaroscuro, chrome, and bloody violence. Sounds pretty good!

Who’s in it?

  • Jessie Buckley as the Bride.
  • Christian Bale as Frankenstein – or Frankenstein’s Monster, of you prefer. We’re agnostic on the subject.
  • Annette Bening as Dr. Euphronious.
  • Peter Sarsgaard as a detective.
  • Penélope Cruz as Myrna.

Plus Jake Gyllenhaal, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, Jeannie Berlin, Linda Emond, Louis Cancelmi, and Matthew Maher in various supporting roles.

When’s it out?

The Bride! hits Australian cinemas like a bolt of lightning on March 26, 2026. So you’ve got a minute.

What’s the vibe?

This’ll be the third Frankenstein riff in recent months by the time it drops – not only will Guillermo Del Toro‘s Netflix take have hit by then, but we also had the pretty great Lisa Frankenstein not long ago. But the thing about the Frankenstein story is it’s remarkably flexible – you can cut and stitch it to fit all kinds of narrative and thematic purposes. How this shakes out is still up for grabs but, man, it looks the business.
