Borderlands 4‘s upcoming DLC Vault Hunter C4SH’s animations were inspired by Gearbox CEO’s sleight of hand magician skills.
The first DLC Vault Hunter coming to Borderlands 4, C4SH, was animated with references from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford’s own magic skills, according to his presentation during Tokyo Game Show.
Taking to the Tokyo Game Show stage to reveal C4SH as the newest DLC Vault Hunter coming to Borderlands 4 in Q1 2026, Pitchford took some time to delve into the robot’s backstory – working in a casino where he was faced with the high and low fortunes of his customers, before becoming a Vault Hunter. Inspired by the luck and chance he witnessed, he now uses playing cards – with his gameplay described as “high risk, high reward” thanks to its reliance on luck.
Randy Pitchford is no stranger to a side quest, having been a professional poker player and magician previously. He went on to describe how his own close-up magic skills – sleight of hand with cards, specifically – were used as the animation reference and inspiration for C4SH’s own animations in Borderlands 4. Pitchford showed a side-by-side of himself palming and throwing cards and C4SH doing the same.
It’s not quite clear beyond C4SH’s backstory exactly what the rest of his deal is as details are still pretty light on – Pitchford was clearly focused on showcasing his sick card trick skills alongside the new Borderlands 4 DLC reveal – but we’ll likely hear more out of the Gearbox camp very soon.
