The Aussie redux of the landmark workplace comedy will not be returning.
Amazon has decided that the Australian version of The Office will be a pop-up rather than a permanent branch. The spin off/remake/whatever will not be getting a second season, according to The Nightly.
Starring Felicity Ward as office manager Hannah Howard, and with an ensemble that included Shari Sebbins, Zoe Terakes, Johhny Brugh, Steen Raskopoulos, and Edith Poor, the 14th (!) international version of The Office was developed by Jackie van Beek (The Breaker Upperers) and Julie De Fina. I’d assumed the series had simply cratered – chatter around it seemed to die the second it was released – but as it turns out the eight episode first (and now only) season was a ratings success when it dropped in October 2024, and stands as the most successful local Amazon production ever. Upon release, it ranked in the top three in 37 countries, the top five in 65, and cracked the top 10 in 102 countries, which isn’t too shabby for a show about as funny as finding blood in your stool.
But fans of mockumentary cringe comedy needn’t fret. The first season of The Paper, a spin off from the Long-running US version of The Office set in the offices of a struggling small town newspaper, is currently streaming on Binge and, unlike The Office Down Under (and there was time not too long ago when that would have been the title) is actually funny. So maybe give that a spin.
