The Elder Scrolls 6 Is “Still A Long Way Off” According To Director Todd Howard

The Elder Scrolls 6 is still “a long way off”, according to director Todd Howard. Speaking to GQ in an interview promoting the second season of Amazon’s Fallout show, the director revealed that he’s “preaching patience” and that he doesn’t “want fans to feel anxious” about its development.

In June 2018, Bethesda teased that the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls 6 was in development. Seven years later, we’ve yet to see more than the logo they shared during the showcase, and sadly, it’s looking like that’ll remain the case for the near future.

The update comes from a new GQ interview with game director Todd Howard, who discusses the state of the game and where things are:

“[The Elder Scrolls 6] is still a long way off…I’m preaching patience. I don’t want fans to feel anxious.”

In truth, as much of a fan I am of Skyrim and would love to play its sequel, but unless I have the game in my hand, I can’t muster enthusiasm for it. Besides, there are plenty of games in the spirit of the franchise that have recently been released, such as Avowed, the remastered Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, or even Valheim.

Still, Howard is keen to keep enthusiasm for the game brewing as he gives small kernels of hope to fans holding out for a release in the near future.

According to the director, they had recently completed a play test with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The collaboration followed after a group of fans donated to the charity, allowing the developers to create a character in someone’s honour. “We spent an hour-and-a-half or so for them to tell us about their character, talk about the game, about why they love The Elder Scrolls, what they want to see from a new one… I think we’re aligned. Then, the afternoon was a three-hour play test of The Elder Scrolls 6.”

Howard seemed to catch himself, though, and quickly ceased giving details. “I like to just announce stuff and release it. My perfect vision – and I’m not saying this is going to happen – is that it’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear”.

The interviewer would then refer to how Bethesda shadow dropped its Oblivion remaster in April and asked if they intended to do the same for Elder Scrolls 6.

“You might say that was a test run,” teased Howard. “It worked out well.”

Now, long-time fans of Bethesda are fully aware that Howard is known to get excited about his projects and can often over-promise just a bit. So, while there’s no doubt the veteran game dev’s enthusiasm is contagious, it’s important to temper one’s expectations.
