Birds of Tokyo have shared the new single ‘Starlights’ as part of a charity campaign launch with the Starlight Foundation, an organisation centred around supporting kids suffering from a serious illness.
Australian rock group Birds of Tokyo have surprise dropped a new single, ‘Starlights’ in support of a new ‘Streamas’ campaign from The Starlight Foundation.
As part of the collaboration, Birds of Tokyo have donated the song to Streamas, a special live-stream fundraising event to raise money to grant a Starlight Wish for kids.
According to guitarist Adam Spark, the track took the band “almost five years to build”.
Singer Ian Kenny would share, “We spent ages trying to understand what this song was meant to be – we just couldn’t force it.”
Spark would contiunue: “There’s something beautifully meta about all this… After half a decade of experimentation we ultimately ended up with a song that’s about letting go of your fears and seizing the day so, as things have turned out, we couldn’t have come up with a better soundtrack for The Starlight Foundation if we had tried.”
The result is a pulpy ballad track that would make Coldplay blush. Fans of the band’s earlier material might appreciate this one more than those more familiar Kenny’s other, more proggy and heavier band Karnivool.

Birds of Tokyo are gearing up to head out on tour, but as part of the charity launch, the band has committed to hospital visits with the Starlight Foundation to raise awareness for the charity.
The band would share a statement on social media, writing about the Starlight Foundations work:
“These wishes bring so much joy and after visiting the Starlight Express Room at Perth Children’s Hospital, we’ve seen firsthand how meaningful this support truly is.”
The ‘Lanterns’ group will be taking part in the Starlight Streamas on Monday, December 1st at 6pm AEDT for a special livestream to raise money for kids suffering from a serious illness.
To add an extra incentive to donate, Birds of Tokyo have promised that “everyone who donates also goes into the draw to win a Fender Telecaster signed by the band”.
If that sounds like something you’d like to catch, you can watch the livestream through the Streamas website.
