Nick Reiner will face two first-degree murder charges in Los Angeles for the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

Nick Reiner, the younger son of film director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, is facing formal murder charges in connection with the deaths of his parents. Los Angeles prosecutors announced that they will file two counts of first-degree murder in court on Tuesday, local time.

The bodies of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were found at their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon. Hours after the discovery, police arrested 32-year-old Nick Reiner, who was taken into custody without incident. Prosecutors said that evidence gathered by the Los Angeles Police Department led homicide detectives to their younger son.

At a press conference, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman confirmed the pending charges and provided details about the allegations. Prosecutors allege that a knife was used in the killings of Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, though he offered few specifics about how events unfolded or the couple’s deaths. The charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole or capital punishment. At this time, prosecutors had not announced whether they would seek the death penalty.

Several publications have reported that Nick Reiner was seen arguing with his parents on Saturday night at a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. While those accounts have circulated widely, law enforcement has not publicly confirmed that detail.

Nick Reiner, the middle child and younger of the couple’s two sons, has been held in a Los Angeles County lock-up since Sunday night. His defence attorney, Los Angeles lawyer Alan Jackson, said that Reiner had not yet been medically cleared to appear in court on Tuesday and could be arraigned on Wednesday.

Reiner has worked as a screenwriter. His credits include co-writing the screenplay for the 2016 film Being Charlie, which was directed by his father.

News of the deaths has drawn an outpouring of tributes for Rob Reiner, who was well known for his work in film and television as well as his political advocacy. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass released a statement calling the situation “a devastating loss for our city and our country,” and noted that “Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice.”

Rob Reiner’s directing career included several beloved films, such as the 1984 rock mockumentary This is Spinal Tap, the 1987 fantasy The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally. As an actor, he was widely remembered for his role as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the 1970s television series All in the Family, a role that earned him two Emmy Awards for outstanding supporting actor.

Michele Singer Reiner was herself an accomplished photographer and film producer. Among her work is the photograph of Donald Trump that appears on the cover of his book Trump: The Art of the Deal. She also produced Shock and Awe, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, God & Country, and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

The deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner have reverberated through the entertainment world and beyond, with friends, colleagues and public figures expressing an outpouring of sympathy for the family’s loss.
