A New Scream 7 TV Spot Wants To Remind You Of The Earlier, Better Scream Movies

Share

Every phone call, ever killer, has led to this.

Since 2022’s Scream, the postmodern horror franchise has put a new cast of characters in the spotlight – and in the sights of whatever malicious maniac is rocking the Ghostface mask this time around. That all changed in an instant when star Melissa Barrera was summarily dismissed due to her online support of Palestine, and co-star Jenna Ortega and director Chris Landon quit in solidarity.

But nothing so trivial can slow down a franchise juggernaut! Original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson was swiftly recruited to direct and co-write, along with original stars Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, plus a few more returning cast members for good measure. Will it work? Look, all I’m saying is this TV spot does a lot to remind you of the older films, but tells you very little about the new one.

What’s the plot?

As the official synopsis tells us:

When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter (Isabel May) becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.

Of course, judging by the new dialogue in the teaser, this may be an old Ghostface killer. Could be Matthew Lillard, gang, just sayin’. We never saw him die…

Who’s in it?

  • Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Gen X’s fave Final Girl.
  • Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, plucky reporter of many haircuts.
  • Isabel May as Tatum Evans, Sidney’s daughter, who I’m fairly sw is a new addition – did we get a reference to Sidney having kids before?
  • Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin, Randy Meeks’ niece and fellow masked murder spree survivor.
  • Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, Mindy’s twin brother, and see above.
  • Joel McHale as Mark Evans, Sidney’s husband… and let’s face it, it’s probably him.

And in roles yet to be announced, we have:

  • Mckenna Grace.
  • Michelle Randolph.
  • Jimmy Tatro.
  • Asa Germann.
  • Celeste O’Connor.
  • Sam Rechner.
  • Ethan Embry.
  • Tim Simon.
  • Mark Consuelos.
  • Anna Camp,

Plus returning players Roger L. Jackson as the voice of Ghostface, David Arquette as the late and much-loved Dewey Riley, Matthew Lillard as OG killer Stu Macher, and Scott Foley as Roman Bridger from Scream 3. Presumably in flashbacks or pre-recorded video or something, but you never know.

When’s it out?

Scream 7 hits Australian cinemas on February 26.

What’s the vibe?

I dunno man. My bar for enjoying a slasher flick is pretty low, but there’s a whiff of desperation about this whole affair. But maybe they’ll nail it? Stranger things have happened.
