Legendary rock photographer Ross Halfin is bringing decades of music history to Melbourne with a new exhibition dedicated to The Black Crowes.
Titled ‘The Black Crowes: Through The Lens Of Ross Halfin’, the exhibition opens Wednesday, April 1st in Collingwood and will showcase a collection of photographs documenting the band across their long career, the event is presented by Behind The Gallery, a pop up exhibition series focused on music photography and pop culture.
For fans of the Robinson brothers and their blues soaked rock legacy, the exhibition promises a rare look behind the curtain.
A decades long collaboration
Halfin has photographed The Black Crowes for much of their career, capturing the band from their early 1990s breakthrough through to their modern-day live shows.
The Melbourne exhibition gathers a curated selection of those images, some have never been publicly shown before, offering fans a rare look at the relationship between photographer and band across multiple eras.
Select prints will also be co-signed by Chris and Rich Robinson, adding another layer of significance for collectors and fans alike, reflecting on the project, Halfin said the exhibition represents years of working alongside the band (per press release):
“I’ve been photographing the Black Crowes more or less since they started and after all these years we’re still working together.
This exhibition features some of the highlights of our long and enjoyable collaboration and includes many of Chris & Rich’s favourite pictures.”
Rock photography as cultural history
Behind The Gallery founder Stephen Dallimore says the exhibition highlights the broader importance of music photography beyond the stage:
“Ross Halfin has documented rock history for decades, and his work with The Black Crowes captures the band at some of their most defining moments. This exhibition brings that long collaboration into an audio infused gallery setting, giving audiences the chance to experience these photographs not just as music images, but as cultural artefacts.”
Alongside the Crowes collection, the exhibition will also include a small selection of Halfin’s wider rock photography archive, the photographer has spent more than four decades documenting some of the biggest names in rock, including Metallica, Guns N’ Roses and Jimmy Page.
All prints displayed in the exhibition will be museum quality archival editions, with selected works available for purchase, the exhibition also lands during The Black Crowes’ Australian tour, giving fans another way to connect with the band while they’re in the country.
The Black Crowes Australian Tour Dates
The exhibition also lands while The Black Crowes are touring Australia, giving fans a chance to catch the band live while Ross Halfin’s images documenting their career are on display in Melbourne.
