For four decades, Candlemass have carried the torch for epic doom metal, now the Swedish legends are finally bringing that towering sound to Australia.
The band has announced its first-ever Australian tour, with shows locked in for Melbourne, Sydney and Perth this September and October, for Australian doom fans, it’s been a long time coming.
Formed in Stockholm in 1985 by bassist and songwriter Leif Edling, Candlemass helped shape the sound of epic doom metal alongside genre pillars Saint Vitus and Trouble, their formula was simple but powerful, crushingly slow riffs with towering vocals.
That blueprint first appeared on their landmark 1986 debut ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’, a record that didn’t just introduce a band, it effectively helped define an entire subgenre.

Across the decades, Candlemass have built one of doom metal’s most respected catalogues, albums like ‘Nightfall’ and ‘Ancient Dreams’ became essential listening for fans of slow, heavy metal, while later releases such as ‘The Door to Doom’ and ‘Sweet Evil Sun’ proved the band’s sound still carries serious weight.
The group’s influence has also reached beyond the underground. Candlemass have won Swedish Grammis Awards and even earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
Now, with original ‘Epicus Doomicus Metallicus’ vocalist Johan Länquist back in the lineup, the band arrives in Australia at full strength.
