Busta Rhymes has quietly settled a legal battle with his former personal assistant, bringing an end to a messy dispute that’s been simmering since early 2025.
The rapper, born Trevor Smith Jr., had been facing serious allegations after an incident in Brooklyn that led to his arrest in January 2025, he was charged with assault following claims he punched his then assistant, Dashiel Gables (per Music News).
The outcome of that criminal case hasn’t been publicly detailed, but the civil fight that followed has now been resolved out of court.
According to reports, both sides reached a private settlement after mediation, with legal teams confirming the process is nearly finalised.
“The parties are finalizing the settlement documentation and anticipate that it will be completed within 10 days,” lawyers wrote in a letter to the judge.
A formal motion is expected to be submitted by June 1st
Claims and counterclaims
The situation escalated months after the initial arrest, in August 2025, Gables filed a federal lawsuit accusing Smith of multiple violations, including physical assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and wage related issues.
Smith denied all allegations and fired back with a countersuit, accusing Gables of defamation.
It turned into a back and forth that looked set to drag through the courts, instead both parties have opted to shut it down privately.
Silence on both sides
Details of the settlement haven’t been made public, and neither Smith nor Gables have commented on the resolution, that silence isn’t unusual in cases like this, settlements often come with confidentiality clauses, especially when both sides have something to lose publicly.
For Busta Rhymes, this closes a chapter that’s been hanging over him for more than a year, while it doesn’t answer every question around the original incident, it does stop the legal bleed. From the outside, it’s another reminder of how quickly things behind the scenes can spill into public view, especially when personal and professional lines blur.
