Just days after opening up about one of the most difficult chapters in their history, Mastodon have officially stepped into the next one.
Atlanta metal titans Mastodon have announced Marrow Deep, their long awaited tenth studio album, arriving on August 28th via Loma Vista Recordings.
Alongside the announcement comes Snakes For Dinner, a towering new single featuring Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, marking his first appearance on a Mastodon recording since Colony of Birchmen almost two decades ago.

If last week’s documentary The Mastodon in the Room was about confronting the past, Marrow Deep is about moving forward.
Five years after Hushed and Grim, the new record finds founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders and Bill Kelliher emerging from years of personal upheaval with what the band describe as a renewed sense of purpose.
Inspired by the Three Fates of Greek mythology and the fragile threads connecting life, loss and destiny, the album channels grief, resilience and transformation into what could become one of the band’s most ambitious releases to date.
Sanders says the creative spark inside Mastodon feels revitalised:
“Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us. That’s a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we’re united, and excited to get to work. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record.”
Marrow Deep also marks the band’s first full-length album featuring guitarist Nick Johnston, alongside significant contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. Produced by Mastodon with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou, then mixed by Andrew Scheps, the album promises the crushing heaviness fans expect while pushing the band’s progressive instincts even further.
New single Snakes For Dinner follows last month’s Your Ghost Again, which quickly became one of the band’s most celebrated songs in years. Built around towering riffs and soaring melodies, the track explores the lingering weight of loss while Josh Homme’s unmistakable guest vocal adds another layer to its emotional impact.
The timing feels particularly significant. Just last week, Mastodon released The Mastodon in the Room, a deeply personal documentary reflecting on the loss of founding guitarist Brent Hinds and the band’s decision to continue.
While that film honoured the past, Marrow Deep feels like the sound of a band choosing to embrace what’s next.
More than 25 years into their career, Mastodon aren’t looking backwards. If Snakes For Dinner is any indication, their next era could prove to be one of their most compelling yet.
