Coal Chamber drummer Mikey “Bug” Cox has shared a positive update on his ongoing cancer recovery, revealing that his latest operation was a success and is expected to be his final surgery related to the disease.
Mikey Cox announced last month that he had been declared cancer free following months of intensive treatment, posted an update from hospital after undergoing another procedure as part of his recovery (per Lambgoat).
Despite facing significant pain following the operation, Cox remained optimistic about what’s ahead:
“First steps post surgery! I’m in a ridiculous amount of pain and I have a massive hole in my stomach that will act as a drain and heal itself.”
He also revealed surgeons were required to cut through and repair part of his abdominal muscle during the procedure:
“They also had to cut my ab muscle and sewed it back together so that is pain every time I breathe but surgery was a massive success and hopefully the last one.”
The recovery won’t be immediate, with Cox now focusing on rebuilding his strength and mobility through rehabilitation:
“I now have to get my walking ability back and then get into all my PT. If I can get a handle on my neuropathy and joint pain we are looking good.”
While acknowledging there’s still a long road ahead, the drummer remains determined to return to performing:
“I’ll be ready to go full steam in a few months! Fxck Cancer.”
Physical and Emotional challenges
The update comes just weeks after Cox publicly detailed his battle with stage three cancer, revealing he underwent five weeks of radiation treatment followed by five months of chemotherapy before surgery successfully removed the remaining tumour.
Doctors later confirmed they had achieved clear margins, allowing Cox to announce he was cancer free, he’s continued to speak openly about the physical and emotional challenges of recovery while encouraging others to prioritise early detection and regular health checks.
Although rehabilitation continues, Cox’s latest update is the strongest indication yet that he’s moving closer to returning behind the drum kit with Coal Chamber.
