Ryan Reynolds has once again proven nobody does self aware marketing quite like Deadpool.
Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds made a surprise appearance during Marvel Studios’ blockbuster San Diego Comic-Con panel, crashing the presentation in full costume to jokingly campaign for a role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (per Hollywood Reporter).
While Marvel boss Kevin Feige, directors Anthony and Joe Russo, and a star studded cast were on stage discussing the highly anticipated blockbuster, Reynolds emerged from the Hall H crowd wearing Deadpool’s grey X-Force suit, a comic-accurate costume yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Introducing himself as “Ricky” and claiming he was simply “cosplaying hard,” Reynolds wasted no time firing off questions at the panel.
His first target was Paul Rudd, asking:
“First question is for Mr. Paul Rudd. Where is Thor, and why was he crying?”
The joke referenced one of the biggest lingering mysteries from 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, where Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is seen holding an apparently dying Deadpool in a mysterious future sequence.
Rudd didn’t miss the opportunity to fire back:
“He’s a Wrexham fan?”
The playful jab referenced the Welsh football club Reynolds co-owns with Rob McElhenney, prompting the Deadpool star to respond:
“You know goddamn well why he was crying.”
Russo brothers up next
Reynolds then turned his attention to the Russo brothers, asking what many Marvel fans have been wondering:
“This seems like an awfully expensive way to announce a film. When do you start filming?”
That question earned an equally cheeky response from Robert Downey Jr., who is returning to the MCU as the villainous Doctor Doom:
“It’s in the can, bro. Look around you. Did you bump your head?”
Realising the joke wasn’t going his way, Deadpool tried one last desperate plea:
“I see. So there’s no additional photography, no overages, hot costs — maybe last minute additions?”
Receiving no encouragement, Reynolds wrapped things up in true Deadpool fashion:
“No further questions. Happy Hogan, fetch the Audi. We’re leaving.”
Although Marvel has yet to officially confirm Deadpool for Avengers: Doomsday, speculation continues to build following the enormous success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed more than US$1.3 billion worldwide.
Reynolds has also confirmed a new standalone Deadpool movie is in development, making it feel less like a matter of if the Merc with a Mouth returns to the MCU, and more when.
