Violent Soho Receive First-Ever Platinum Album Certification For 'Hungry Ghost'

Over 13 years after its release, Violent Soho‘s third album Hungry Ghost has been officially certified Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) – marking the band’s first-ever record of this sales tier for one of their albums.

The band were surprised backstage with their official commemorative plaques before taking to the stage for their very sold-out hometown warm-up show in Mansfield last Thursday (September 3rd). It marks their fourth Platinum record from ARIA overall, with the other three having gone to their singles: 2013’s ‘Covered in Chrome’, which is on Hungry Ghost, as well as 2015’s ‘Like Soda’ and 2016’s ‘Viceroy’ lifted from their fourth album, Waco.

“We recorded Hungry Ghost with our mate Bryce Moorhead in a Brisbane shed with no expectations back in 2013,” the band shared in a statement.

“To see the love it’s received over the last 13 years has been very humbling. We never imagined people would keep connecting with it, and we’re so grateful for the community behind it.”

Hungry Ghost was released almost exactly 13 years ago, having first come out on September 6th in 2013 via I Oh You locally and SideOneDummy internationally. Along with the aforementioned ‘Covered in Chrome’, which has since become the band’s signature song, the album also featured the singles ‘In the Aisle’, ‘Saramona Said’ and ‘Fur Eyes’.

It debuted at number six on the ARIA Albums Chart upon release, and was certified Gold by ARIA within a year. The album won both Best Independent Album and Best Independent Hard Rock/Punk Album at the Australian Independent Record (AIR) Awards, and won the Queensland Music Award for Best Album.

Violent Soho are slated to kick off a run of sold-out east coast shows on Friday (September 11), with two back-to-back shows at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney. They will also play two shows apiece at Melbourne’s Forum and Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall. Beddy Rays will serve as main support for all the shows, while Teenage Joans will open in Sydney and Brisbane. Secret World will step in for Teenage Joans in Melbourne.
