My Chemical Romance are continuing the 20th anniversary celebrations for The Black Parade with a new expanded edition bringing together everything completed during the landmark album’s original sessions.
The band unveiled the collection on September 9th, with new vinyl pressings, CDs and cassettes being prepared alongside newly commissioned artwork from James Jean, the artist whose work helped define the visual identity of the original album.
My Chemical Romance reflected on the record’s beginnings alongside the announcement (per The PRP).
“Twenty years ago, we wrote what would become “The Black Parade”, our third record and the follow up to “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge”.”
“At the time, we could never have imagined what the record would mean for the band. All we knew is that we had made something crazy, and something we couldn’t wait to get it out into the world.”
The expanded collection is particularly notable for what it contains, with the band saying it marks the first time everything completed during the album sessions has been assembled in one release.
Jean has also returned to the world he helped create two decades ago, producing three new pieces of artwork featuring characters associated with the era.
“James is truly a one-of-a-kind artist, and so important to how this record was presented to the world. We are extremely grateful for meeting him all those years ago, and agreeing now to make something new.”
The release arrives in the middle of an extensive anniversary campaign for The Black Parade. My Chemical Romance have spent this year taking the album back into stadiums across Europe and North America, with the current run featuring a rotating cast of special guests including Iggy Pop, BABYMETAL, Jimmy Eat World and The Mars Volta.
The band will conclude the current run with three nights at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl in October.
