Ubisoft Reportedly Wants ‘Motherbrain’ GenAI Across as Many Games as Possible

Share

Ubisoft has reportedly turned its Motherbrain generative AI initiative into a company-wide operation intended to reach as many of its games as possible.

The change was reported by Insider Gaming, which says several sources described Motherbrain as a new “global entity” within the publisher. Ubisoft has not publicly announced the structure, so the scope remains based on internal reporting rather than a formal product reveal.

An internal announcement quoted in the report says the team will build proprietary AI technology and middleware as a shared foundation for Ubisoft studios. It is being led by Xavier Manzanares, a 23-year company veteran whose credits include the Mario + Rabbids series and more recent research work on Ubisoft’s generative AI projects.

The distinction matters. Motherbrain does not appear to be a single tool attached to one game. It is being positioned as infrastructure, closer to an internal service that individual development teams can draw from. Insider Gaming’s sources compare its importance with Ubisoft’s Creative Houses and Core Services.

That ambition also lands during another round of cost cutting. Ubisoft is seeking a further €180 million in savings, which makes any promise to “accelerate” development difficult to separate from the financial pressure surrounding it. Generative AI is already sold to studios as a way to reduce production time and costs. The unresolved part is what that means for creative labour, authorship and the character of the games produced with it.

BLUNT has previously looked at how algorithmic systems are shaping entertainment habits. Motherbrain shifts that question further upstream, from how games are recommended to how they may be built.

Until Ubisoft details the initiative publicly, the key facts are limited: a central team exists, shared generative AI technology is the goal, and the company reportedly wants it used broadly. Ubisoft has not said which games will use it or what players will notice.
