Coal Chamber’s Mikey Cox Undergoes Surgery After Breaking Femur

The drummer will miss two upcoming US shows, with Davier Pérez stepping in while he recovers.

Coal Chamber drummer Mikey ‘Bug’ Cox has broken his femur in a basketball accident and undergone surgery, forcing him to sit out the band’s next two shows.

In a statement shared by Coal Chamber, Cox said he fell onto concrete after colliding with another parent during a game with his son. The injury required three pins, and he expects to be unable to walk for at least six weeks.

That rules him out of Sick New World Texas in Fort Worth on 24 October and the band’s Halloween show at House of Blues Anaheim on 31 October. Davier Pérez, identified by Blabbermouth as DevilDriver drummer Davier Pérez Ortega, will cover both performances.

“I’m absolutely crushed to miss these shows and was determined not to let them get cancelled,” Cox wrote.

He said Pérez has worked with him for years and has his complete trust. Cox also hopes to attend the Anaheim show from the crowd, although that remains dependent on his recovery.

The setback follows an already difficult period for the drummer. BLUNT reported in April that Cox had disclosed a stage three cancer diagnosis and said he was cancer free after treatment. A July update detailed another successful operation and the rehabilitation still ahead.

In his new statement, Cox described his bones as fragile following chemotherapy, radiation and previous surgeries. That is his account of his condition.

Pérez will keep both October shows on track while Cox focuses on his recovery. The drummer has yet to confirm when he expects to return to the stage.
