Hammers are about to drop their new album ‘Death Wobbles’ this Friday (January 23rd), and if you’ve caught them live over the years, you already know this band doesn’t do subtle.
To mark the release Rick Trewavas talks about the songs that really light him up behind the bass, from fresh cuts that are already becoming setlist weapons, to a throwback track that defined early Hammers DNA.
Here are Rick’s favourite songs to play live
#01 – Death Wobbles
This is a new song in the set, and it’s quickly become my favourite to play live. I love playing the groove riff in the verses, they are so bouncy and fun to play, and the whole band vibes pretty hard to it. I also love the bridge section where Stoney sings his part. Big emotions in that for me, and pretty sure we all get the chills/feels when we kick into that section. Special song for me.
#02 – The Well
Another new song, and it’s by far the heaviest in our set. Again, big feels in the chorus of this one, and just the overall heaviness of this carries a lot of weight, and is super satisfying to play on bass haha. The verses and bridge especially are heavy af, and it translates like a sledgehammer live. Love the power and aggression in this one, but still has a lot of emotion in the choruses. Very fun to deliver in the live setting.
#03 – The Other Side
I’m gonna take it way back to our oldest song ‘The Other Side’. This was released as a single on the Cement Records compilation called ‘Rock Solid’. Cement Records is a Melbourne label run by Casey Dean of Engine Three Seven. This track was recorded before I was even in the band, and was the first song Stoney played on. I joined the band not long after this one dropped. We don’t play it live anymore, but it was a staple in the set for years. It’s a gritty rock song, and I’ve always frothed playing it live. It’s old school Hammers at it’s best. You can listen/download it from our bandcamp – https://hammersau.bandcamp.com
#04 – Apeshit
First song off our new album ‘Death Wobbles’ and it’s a fuckin stonker. It’s a riff party from start to finish, and features some Aussie rap fire from our front bloke Fish haha. Got the classic melodic Stoney chorus, and the outro riff is rad. Just a full-tilt ripper that’s super fun to play on stage.
#05 – Traps
Traps is a recent single we released and features on the upcoming album. Very much our most ‘single’ type tune, very melodic, but still nice and girthy around the edges. I love sinking into that verse riff out of the chorus, again, feels nice and powerful to play on the bass, and also love the bridge breakdown riff. This song has a really good flow to it, and has become a super sick song to play live. How goods music?!
