Magnolia Park Talk Lore, Horror Films And Their Australian Return With BABYMETAL

Share

Magnolia Park have never been easy to pin down, since forming in Orlando in 2018, the five piece have built a reputation for blending punk, hip-hop, metalcore and hard rock into something restless and unpredictable.

Now Magnolia Park are heading back to Australia, joining BABYMETAL and Bloodywood for a run of arena shows as well as a headline stop in Melbourne, for the band returning to Australia is something they talk about often while touring elsewhere.

“Yeah, for sure. Like we always talk about going back to Australia, it’s been our one of our best times on tour,” the band says, adding that it’s “definitely our favorite place to go and travel to. We love it so much.”

Part of that excitement comes from the audience they expect to meet on the BABYMETAL tour, Magnolia Park have built their reputation on a sound that moves between melodic pop-punk and crushing heaviness, and they plan to lean into that contrast on this run.

“I think just we’re very heavy band when we need to be. I think we’re just excited to play our heaviest songs for like, Baby Metal and my audience, and get some crazy mosh pit circle pits, do our thing, you know.”

The band’s connection to Australia goes beyond the shows themselves, on their first visit in 2023 they barely paused before exploring the country.

“Actually, the first time we were in Australia in 2023 we like, arrived at the airport and went straight to the Royal National Park,” bassist Vincent Ernst explains. “We took a ferry over and just went hiking for like, five hours day one. It was amazing.”

Vocalist Joshua Roberts is also hoping to capture some of the landscape on camera this time around, outside of Magnolia Park he’s been exploring filmmaking, inspired by the horror movies he grew up watching.

“Always growing up watching films, watching like Breakfast Club and 13 ghosts and Freddie versus Jason and stuff like that, really got me into doing cinematography.”

He recently finished a short project that leans heavily into that world:

“Yeah, just finished doing a scream inspired short film, and I’m going to be doing another horror film within the next few months as well.”

Nights After VAMP

While Roberts experiments with filmmaking, Magnolia Park continue expanding the fictional universe around their music, their upcoming release Nights After VAMP (Available Thursday) pushing deeper into the story introduced on their previous record.

“Nights after vamp is a continuation of the vamp story line, and it’s a continuation of our sounds,” the band explains. “It’s also a prelude into our next album we’re working on now.”

The project continues the narrative world of Nocturne Nexus, a dystopian setting inspired by anime, horror and fantasy, you can dig further into the lore through the band’s website, which maps out the characters and storyline behind the records.
