Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season Two Will Be Sadder, Bloodier and Even More Brutal

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners team says season two of the highly-acclaimed show will be even darker, with no plans for happy endings.

Get ready for more blood, heartbreak and nihilism in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season two. The Netflix anime set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077 is officially returning, and according to the team behind it, things are only going to get worse.

Announced during Anime Expo, the next season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was unveiled with a teaser trailer and some revealing commentary from writer Bartosz Sztybor, who confirmed that season two will dive deeper into the show’s already bleak emotional core. The team always want to “write stories that are character driven,” Sztybor told the audience during a panel at the event.

But don’t expect those stories to be uplifting. “I’m from Poland and people in Poland are sad. They are born sad, they die sad, so I just wanted to make the whole world sad,” Sztybor said, prompting laughter from the crowd. When asked if he’d ever considered changing course and offering viewers something more cheerful, he bluntly replied, “No.”

“When people are sad, then I’m a bit happy,” he added.

There’s still no release date for the new season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, but it has been confirmed that the next chapter will feature a standalone story set in the same world as Cyberpunk 2077, told over 10 episodes.

According to the official synopsis, viewers can expect “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge,” and a series that questions “what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter” in a world fuelled by violence and spectacle.

Season one of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners debuted in 2022 to widespread acclaim, and played a major role in revitalising interest in Cyberpunk 2077. With season two now on the horizon, Night City is once again gearing up to break hearts and burn bright.
