Jared Leto is stepping into the skull-faced shoes of Skeletor for the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie. Known for his intense method acting, the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman will tackle the iconic villain in a film set to release on June 5, 2026.
Directed by Travis Knight (Bumblebee), the movie aims to revive the beloved franchise for a new generation. Joining Leto is Nicholas Galitzine, cast as He-Man, the heroic alter ego of Prince Adam. The star-studded lineup also includes Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Camila Mendes as Teela, and Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms.
For fans of the original cartoon and toy line, Skeletor remains one of the most memorable villains ever created. With his skull-like face and cackling voice, the sorcerer of Snake Mountain has terrorized Eternia since 1982. The last live-action Masters of the Universe adaptation was the 1987 cult film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor.
This reboot comes courtesy of Mattel Films, who are fresh off their success with Barbie. Clearly, they’re hoping lightning strikes twice as they take another nostalgic brand to the big screen.
Leto’s casting, as always, has sparked debate. His past portrayals of edgy characters—like the Joker in Suicide Squad and Dr. Michael Morbius in Morbius—have polarised audiences. While some praise his dedication to transformative roles, others remain sceptical about whether his method-acting intensity can capture Skeletor’s mix of menace and camp.
Skeletor isn’t your average villain. He’s equal parts terrifying sorcerer and sarcastic megalomaniac. How Leto balances those extremes will be key to whether his portrayal resonates with fans.
Travis Knight is expected to bring fresh energy to the project, blending action, nostalgia, and modern sensibilities. For now, though, all eyes are on Leto’s take on one of the most over-the-top villains in pop culture.
