French horror maven Christophe Gans returns after 20 years to reboot the video game adaptation.
I wouldn’t go so far to say that the 2006 Silent Hill movie proved you could make great film out of a video game, but it showed you could make a pretty decent one. Then 2012’s Silent Hill: Revelation came along to remind us that it’s not as easy as it looks. Now, original Silent Hill director Christophe Gans (the excellent Brotherhood Of The Wolf) is back in the saddle to see if he can life the average.
Return To Silent Hill Teaser
What’s the plot?
Return To Silent Hill is a direct adaptation of the game Silent Hill 2, so if you’ve ever booted that up, you’re ahead on plot details. But for those of us who haven’t, let’s give the official synopsis a once over:
James is devastated after being separated from his soulmate and receives a mysterious letter that leads him back to a town called Silent Hill, where he hopes to find her. However, he discovers that the town has been changed by some unknown malevolent force and as he delves deeper into the town, he finds terrifying figures, both familiar and unfamiliar. Doubting his mental stability, he tries to comprehend reality and hopes to stay strong enough to rescue his beloved.
Obviously the line “…and then a guy with a pyramid for a head shows up” was cut off for some reason. Sloppy, really.
Who’s in it?
Jeremy Irvine is James Sunderland; Hannah Emily Anderson is Mary; and Evie Templeton, who portrayed the character in the Silent Hill 2 video game remake, as Laura. And that’s your lot for now.
When’s it out?
Return To Silent Hill seeps into Australian cinemas like toxic fumes from an underground coal fire on January 22 2026.
What’s the vibe?
Gans is a bit hit or miss, but when he hits he hits. But this thing was shot back in 2022, so the delay raises a few eyebrows. And while the effects in that brief video may well be unfinished, right now the CGI looks like it’s from the first movie – and there’s a lot of CGI there. We might need to wait for the full trailer before we make a call here.
