Snoop Dogg is heading to the big screen, with a new biopic officially in the works and set to land in cinemas in 2027.
Titled ‘Snoop’, the film will chart the rise of the West Coast icon, with Outer Banks actor Jonathan Daviss stepping into the role, the project was confirmed by Snoop himself during an appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this month, where he made it clear this won’t be a watered down retelling:
“If we are going to do a Snoop Dogg movie, I gotta get gangsta with it,” he told the crowd (per XXL).
A heavyweight team behind the scenes
There’s some serious industry muscle backing this one, the film will be produced by Brian Grazer, the same name behind Eminem’s ‘8 Mile’, which famously scored an Oscar for ‘Lose Yourself’.
Directing duties fall to Craig Brewer, known for ‘Hustle & Flow’, another film that carved its own lane in music storytelling, that combination signals a biopic aiming for more than nostalgia, if anything, it suggests a focus on grit, not gloss.
Why Jonathan Daviss?

Snoop has already spoken about why Daviss landed the role, backing the younger actor’s ability to carry the weight of his story : “Jonathan is the whole thing. He’s dynamic actor. He’s a great spirit and he’s a learner. He’s able to take things and make it better,” Snoop said in a previous interview.
It’s a big call, playing Snoop Dogg isn’t just about mimicking the voice or the walk, it’s about capturing a presence that’s shaped decades of hip hop culture.
More than another music biopic?
Music biopics have been everywhere lately, but not all of them land, some lean too hard on myth-building, others play it safe. An R-rated approach could be what separates ‘Snoop’ from the pack, Snoop’s career isn’t clean cut, it cuts through controversy, reinvention, and a level of longevity most artists never touch.
Universal Pictures is handling production and distribution, with no exact release date locked beyond the 2027 window, for now it’s early days. If this one commits to telling the full story, not just the highlight reel, it could actually hit with some weight, I for one am very keen for it.
