Twelve years is a long time to keep a tour shirt in rotation.

Avenged Sevenfold’s first Australian tour since 2014 reached Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Sunday, 18 October, with Coheed and Cambria and Thornhill sharing the bill. Gerry Nicholls was there for BLUNT, photographing the Brisbane stop of the band’s 2026 Australian and New Zealand tour.

The live setlist on setlist.fm opens with “Nightmare” and heads straight into “Game Over” and “Afterlife,” putting different eras beside each other. “Bat Country” and “Unholy Confessions” appear later, while “Seize the Day” carries a dedication to Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. The closing stretch moves from a drum solo into “A Little Piece of Heaven” and “Cosmic.”

The selection reaches across six studio albums, with the band’s early metalcore years and later experiments both represented. “Game Over,” “Nobody” and “Cosmic” come from Life Is But a Dream…, giving that studio album three places in the running order. The return leaves room for the music they have made during that long Australian absence.

Nicholls’ photographs get close enough to show the smaller movements inside the arena production: a hand stretched towards the room, a glance down at a fretboard, a bassist caught mid-jump. His low angles put the guitars almost within reach, with stage lights cutting through the space above the musicians.

The gallery moves between colour and black and white, from hooded portraits at the microphone to the drummer behind a kit crowded with cymbals. There are individual frames of the players and shots that bring them together. Geometric screens dominate the wider compositions; in others, a face or a raised arm is picked out against an almost entirely black background.
