Evanescence had Sydney’s Metro Theatre wrapped around their finger on Friday night as they blazed through a career-spanning set.
Evanescence has been part of the alt kid psyche since they smashed onto the scene, and their performance at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on Friday (November 14) proved that their decades-long legacy hasn’t diminished as time goes on.
Serving as a support act for Metallica on their own massive M72 World Tour, the band opted to get out amongst even more fans through a run of intimate shows – that is, performances at smaller venues than the packed-out stadiums they’ve been performing to for the last week and a bit. For Sydney fans, that was Metro Theatre, and the smaller crowds made for a magical performance in which the band had everyone entranced from the opening note to their final song.
Coming on the stage to ‘Killing In The Name’ by Rage Against The Machine, Evanescence wasted no time getting into it with ‘Afterlife,’ performed against a screen playing a very 2000s AMV-style edit of the Devil May Cry anime (in which the song features).
Across nineteen tracks, the band soared through their discography – with plenty of classics in amongst the setlist. The crowd screamed their heart out in what felt like group catharsis (one could liken it to the group scream-cry in Midsommar), and cried together to ‘My Immortal.’
Evanescence’s impact on fans has never diminished, and Friday was a testament to that. Capping it all off with ‘Bring Me To Life,’ not a soul left Metro Theatre without losing their voice as they got lost in the music.
Here’s hoping next time they hit our shores, we’ll get a full headline run at major venues – but perhaps nothing can take away from the magic of seeing them closer than possibly ever before, and ever again.
