Gallery: Supergrass At The Forum, Melbourne – 7 June 2025

Supergrass brought their Britpop brilliance to The Forum in Melbourne last weekend, celebrating 30 years of I Should Coco with a stacked, nostalgia-fuelled set.

Supergrass turned Melbourne’s Forum Theatre into a time machine on Saturday night, blasting through their I Should Coco 30th anniversary set with the kind of joy and fire that made them Britpop icons in the first place.

Local psych-rock heroes Rocket Science warmed up the crowd with a set that felt equal parts chaos and charm. They might’ve been the support act, but they didn’t play like it – it was loud, wild, and a perfect chaotic foil for what was to come.

Then it was time. Supergrass kicked things off with a taped intro of Blockbuster by Sweet before diving headfirst into I’d Like to Know. From the first riff, the crowd was locked in. Gaz Coombes didn’t waste a second before tearing into Caught by the Fuzz, which hit with the same adrenaline rush it did back in the mid-’90s. Mansize Rooster and Alright followed in quick succession, with punters pogoing in the aisles like they were back in high school (or wished they were).

A brief false start led to a bit of laughter and a reset before Lenny kicked in properly. From there it was one after another: Strange OnesSitting Up StraightShe’s So LooseWe’re Not Supposed To – all delivered with a crispness that belied the band’s years away from Aussie stages. The Forum’s faux-night-sky ceiling and towering proscenium added a dreamy haze to the whole thing, but the performance was razor sharp.

They closed the album with the mellow Time To Go, bringing out their guitar tech for some extra hands and a moment of calm. Then came the encore.

Richard III landed like a sucker punch, followed by Late in the DayMaryMoving and Grace — a reminder that I Should Coco was just the beginning for a band that never stopped evolving.

By the time Pumping on Your Stereo brought the house down, the entire room was in full singalong mode. And just to send everyone off properly, they blasted I’ve Had The Time of My Life over the PA as the lights came up. Yeah, it was cheesy. But it was also absolutely perfect.
