The Superjesus packed out the Corner Hotel for a career-spanning set celebrating their first new album in 20 years.
Melbourne’s Corner Hotel was at full capacity on Friday night as Australian rock legends The Superjesus rolled into town, armed with a new album, a killer back catalogue, and the kind of live energy that only comes from 30 years of doing it right.
The Superjesus’ set was split across two chapters – first, a front-to-back run of their brand new self-titled album, then a greatest hits onslaught that had the room buzzing with nostalgia. It’s been 20 years since their last full-length record, but the crowd packed in shoulder-to-shoulder like they never left.
Sarah McLeod was in fine form from the jump, kicking off the night with ‘Starlight’ and launching into a charged delivery of The Superjesus in full. The new tracks hit live with serious weight – ‘Romance’, ‘Loneliness Is The New Black’ and ‘We Won’t Let Go Until It’s Over’ all landed like long-lost classics, while ‘Diamonds’ offered a rare and tender moment, McLeod switching gears with rich, emotive vocals that pinned the room.
They capped off the album run with their punchy take on Generation X’s ‘Dancing With Myself’, then launched into a second act packed with fan favourites. ‘Down Again’, ‘Now and Then’, and ‘Secret Agent Man’ sparked immediate singalongs, while ‘Ashes’ and ‘Shut My Eyes’ reminded everyone just how deep the band’s songwriting chops still run. The night wrapped with ‘Gravity’ – the kind of anthem that still gives goosebumps after all these years.
The room may have skewed older, but the energy never dipped. It was wall-to-wall diehards mouthing every word, hands in the air, soaking in a band that’s still evolving without losing touch with what made them iconic to begin with.
