Sydney’s UNSW Roundhouse was a time machine on Saturday night as Short Stack tore through their Stack Is The New Black anniversary set with all the chaos, charm and cheeky energy that made them icons in the first place.
Forever Ends Here kicked off the night with full-throttle nostalgia, ripping into a tight, high-energy set that reminded everyone just how deep the scene roots go. RedHook followed up with their signature mix of alt-pop venom and stadium-sized confidence – vocalist Emmy Mack wasted no time commanding the stage, as pits opened and fists flew.
Then it was time for the main event. Short Stack strode onstage to a wave of deafening screams and wasted no time diving into the chaos, opening with ‘Ladies & Gentlemen’ before detonating into ‘Princess’ and ‘Shimmy A Go Go’. It was wall-to-wall hooks, hairflips, and throwbacks – the room felt like it had been transported back to 2009, just with better lighting and bigger speakers.
The band didn’t just rely on the hits either. A medley mid-set crammed in five deep cuts, while ‘Shotgun Wedding’ and ‘Thick as Thieves’ reminded fans that Short Stack’s newer material still slaps just as hard. A drum solo over Daft Punk’s ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’ gave drummer Bradie Webb his moment to shine — not that the crowd had stopped screaming since the first chorus.
Short Stack then returned for an encore that hit every emotional note: ‘We Dance to a Different Disco, Honey’ and ‘Back of My Head’ brought the nostalgia full circle, before the band closed out with ‘Sway, Sway Baby!’ – entrancing the energetic crowd that sung along to every song whether posted up at the barrier or all the way at the back.
If the 15 Years of Stack Is The New Black tour was meant to prove that Short Stack are more than just a phase – mission accomplished.
