Baldur’s Gate 3 Developers Are Celebrating The Game’s Second Birthday By Sharing Fun Player Stats

Baldur’s Gate 3 has just celebrated its second birthday, and to capstone the big event, developer Larian Studios has shared a teaser for their next big game, and some fun player stats for their 2023 classic.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is celebrating the game‘s second birthday, and to honour the milestone, developer Larian Studios has released some fun player data for us all to enjoy.

If two years feels too short, that’s fair. Larian has been steadily dropping free updates for the game, sharing tonnes of new content for us all to go through. On April 15, the game received its final patch, adding a photo mode, 12 new sub-classes and tidied up its cross-play feature. As if we needed another excuse to start a new run.

Baldur’s Gate 3 also spent a fair amount of time in Early Access. For almost a year, you could buy the game and play through an early version of the title. This version was far less polished, but still had its charm. However, story and character reworks were some of the most notable changes. For example, the companion Wyll received a massive character rework, altering his backstory entirely.

Depending on who you ask, those changes were all for the better as the game has become one of the highest-rated and most commercially successful role-playing games in years, selling over 15 million copies.

Here are some of the fun stats the company shared.

In their social media post celebrating Baldur’s Gate 3’s second year, the company wrote, “We’ve watched you embrace characters, rewrite the rules, and make the world your own for two years, and we’re still in awe of your support.”

“To celebrate, we’re sharing the rare achievements and the even rarer choices that you’ve been making in-game!”

And oh boy, did they deliver.

For example, it turns out that not a lot of players went out of their way to get all the achievements in the game. Only 1.82% of players managed to earn 100 gold from playing music on Steam. However, 2.26% of PlayStation players had.

A famous achievement required players to multiclass all the characters in the game without asking Withers to respec them. Unsurprisingly, only 2.30% of players have achieved this, because come on, no one wants to keep Shadowheart and Astarion as the same sub-class. As a famous, angry video game nerd once said, “What were they thinking?”

In fact, the company later shared that 4,890,005 players had gone out of their way to respec the beloved Shart into a viable character.

Larian also highlighted fans’ ingenious theory crafting, pointing out that a stunning 4,647 players had managed to beat its hardest difficulty using only a level 1 character.

More surprising and niche was that only 598 players managed to adopt a child with Wyll. Everyone in the comments resoundingly responded, “Wait, you can do that?”

CEO of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, also shared an update on the studios next game, writing:

““Crazy to think it’s only been two years,” he said. “It’s truly been life changing. Probably worth writing about one day. But I can spoil the biggest takeaway. BG3 was what allowed us to do our next crazy thing. How that will pan out is anyone’s guess but I can assure you we’re working hard to ensure you’ll have plenty of fun. Like really – loads of it. In a surprising way. And I can’t wait to show you. But you’ll need to be patient / we’ll need a bit of time to make it all work. It’ll be worth it though.”

It’s unclear as of now whether the next game from the studio will be another Divinity title or a fresh IP from the studio. Either way, you can bet gamers are beyond eager to get their hands on it (myself included).
