You can now add a vape screen to the long list of weird devices that can technically run Doom.
The list of strange objects capable of running Doom just got even weirder. Thanks to YouTuber Aaron Christophel, the original 1993 classic has now been made playable on a vape pen – sort of.
Christophel managed to get Doom working on a Pixo Aspire vape, which comes with a 32-bit processor and 384kb of flash memory. While that isn’t quite enough power for the device to run the game on its own, it’s surprisingly close. To make it work, the vape was connected to a PC via USB, with the computer doing the heavy lifting while the vape functioned as a secondary screen.
In the demo, the vape’s tiny side display shows the game in action, with Christophel’s inputs translating to gameplay in real time. While it isn’t running natively, the fact that it’s even showing up in real time at all on a vape screen of all things is still pretty impressive.
While some might argue there’s not exactly a practical reason anyone would need Doom on a vape – I beg to differ – it continues the long tradition of fans seeing how far they can push id Software’s classic.
The Pixo Aspire isn’t the first odd piece of tech to be added to the Doom roster. Over the years, the game has been made playable on everything from lawn mowers to ATMs. The vape is simply the latest proof that Doom will run anywhere, as long as someone is determined enough.
What random cursed object will Doom run on next? The sky’s the limit, honestly. Here’s hoping next we get the game running fully on a vape screen – so all those folks vaping at festivals have a fun little time-passer between sets that won’t drain their phone batteries.
