Hideo Kojima Is Coming To Sydney For A World-First Event With George Miller

Share

In a move that’s already got both gamers and film nerds vibrating with anticipation, Death Stranding mastermind Hideo Kojima is heading to Sydney this June – and he’s not coming alone.

The visionary game creator behind Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding will appear in conversation with none other than Aussie cinema legend George Miller (Mad MaxFuriosa) as part of a world-exclusive event during the Sydney Film Festival.

The talk, happening Saturday June 14 at Sydney Town Hall, is a major stop on Kojima’s Death Stranding World Strand Tour 2, celebrating the launch of his next mind-bending epic Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, dropping June 26 on PlayStation 5.

This won’t just be a fan Q&A or lightweight press affair. Kojima and Miller will deep-dive into the blurred frontier between cinema and games – two mediums they’ve each spent decades reshaping. If you’re familiar with Kojima’s work, you already know his love of film bleeds into every frame of gameplay. The man literally says he’s “70% movies” in his bio.

Now, with Death Stranding 2 featuring Miller himself as a character and Australia as part of the in-game world, the connection between the two creatives couldn’t be more direct – or meta. Expect insights on how the boundary-breaking sequel is pushing storytelling into new interactive territory, what inspired its cinematic vision, and why Kojima sees George Miller as both a collaborator and personal hero.

The conversation is being hyped as a once-in-a-lifetime event, and given Kojima’s elusive nature and Miller’s legendary status, it’s hard to argue.

Presented as part of Sydney Film Festival, and co-presented by the NSW Government and Screen NSW, the event’s already pegged as one of the fest’s biggest cultural flexes.

It’s not Kojima’s only finger in the Australian pie this year (excuse the questionable idiom) – beyond featuring Down Under in Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, the Strands of Harmony concert tour is also hitting Sydney this November as its only Aussie stop. There’s a lot to get keen for if you’re a fan of Kojima’s work, that’s for sure (providing you’re in Sydney, that is).

Whether you’re a gamer, cinephile, or just a sucker for big-brain art talk, this is one for the calendar.
