Hollow Knight: Silksong has massively debuted with over 535k concurrent players on Steam, crashing platforms at launch.
After years of anticipation, Hollow Knight: Silksong has finally launched, and the numbers show just how strong the demand has been. At release, the game reached a peak of 535,213 concurrent players on Steam, with so many rushing in that online platforms struggled to keep up.
Across Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch, players reported store slowdowns and temporary crashes as fans scrambled to download the game.
As of the time of writing, over 355,000 people are concurrently playing Hollow Knight: Silksong via Steam.
The launch marks a milestone for Adelaide-based studio Team Cherry, which has become one of the most acclaimed independent developers in Australia. What began as an intended DLC for Hollow Knight grew into a full-scale sequel that has dominated conversation in gaming circles for years.
After years of fans waiting with bated breath, Team Cherry announced in late August that Hollow Knight: Silksong would officially arrive on 4 September. With just a few weeks between the announcement and launch, the hype train reignited at full speed – and it’s clearly just getting started if the player numbers are any indication.
The love for Team Cherry’s newest title has extended into unexpected corners of the internet, too: even users on a piracy subReddit have been recommending that players buy Hollow Knight: Silksong given the relatively low cost for what many are considering a major release – even though the game comes from a relatively small, local team.
It’s clear the game is onto a good thing (as many hoped and expected) – as of the time of writing, over 13,000 reviews on Steam have Hollow Knight: Silksong sitting at an ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ rating. One positive review reads: “Trying to buy this game on release day was the worst and most painful, two and half hour long edging session in my entire life…It was worth it.”
It goes without saying that it looks like it’s going to be a very Silksong kinda weekend for a lot of gamers around the globe.
