Star Wars: Galactic Racer was announced at this year’s Game Awards, showing off the all-new galactic-spanning racing game sure to scratch that podracing itch.
Fans of podracing are in for a treat, as Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a new racing game set within the Star Wars universe, revealed today at The Game Awards.
If I had a nickel for every Star Wars game announced at the Game Awards this year, I’d have two nickels, which is pretty neat, as Star Wars: The Fate of the Old Republic was also announced earlier in the ceremony.
Developed by the new studio Fuse Games (from former Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and Burnout Paradise devs), the new Star Wars: Galactic Racer will see players race throughout the desert world of Jakku, riding through wrecked Star Destroyers under a blistering sun.
The trailer showed off a few other worlds as well, including an ice planet (which may be Hoth), and the new planet, Sentinel One, will also be a playable location, with giant antennas littering the landscape.
You can check out the trailer below:
In an interview, Fuse Games co-founder Matt Webster and VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games Douglas Reilly revealed more details in an interview with StarWars.com, and confirmed it was, in fact, Sebulba making that surprise cameo at the end.
While it’s not exactly a podracing game, the classic Star Wars: Episode I: Racer is at the core of its DNA, as Reilly would share.
“When a team with such amazing racing chops like Fuse proposed a new expression of racing in a galaxy far, far away, it was a true no-brainer decision,” Reilly shared. In addition to the great work on our projects, they have been industry leaders in some of the most beloved racing franchises in Need for Speed and Burnout. I can’t think of any other studio better suited to bring Star Wars racing back to our fans.”
On the cameo with Sebulba, Webster would go on to say:
“There’s so much love for Sebulba on the team and across the Star Wars community,” he shared. “There are particular reasons why he finds his way into our trailer as well as a detail in this shot that may lead to even more questions…the answers to which we’ll have to leave to another time!”
For what actually happens in the game, well, thankfully, an official blurb does exist, which reads as follows:
“Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a runs-based, high-stakes reinvention of racing born in the lawless Outer Rim of the Star Wars galaxy. With the Empire gone and the galaxy rebuilding, the Galactic League is formed: an underground, unsanctioned circuit where syndicates bankroll chaos and champions are forged. “No Force. No prophecy. Just skill, strategy, and the will to rise.”
No official release date has been shared with the game just yet, however, I’m hopeful the game won’t experience the same delays as previous games (ahem KOTOR remake) announced at The Game Awards in recent years.
