There has been yet another major shakeup in the deathcore ranks. A Wake In Providence have officially parted ways with frontman Adam Mercer, bringing an end to a six-year run that helped define the band’s post-Will Ramos era.
Mercer joined AWIP in 2018 following Ramos’ exit to join Lorna Shore. Stepping into that space wasn’t small shoes to fill, but Mercer quickly cemented his place in the lineup. He helped drive the band’s evolution across their heavier, more theatrical releases and, in doing so, earned a loyal following along the way.
In a statement shared online, the band announced Mercer’s departure without offering much detail beyond the usual split-speak. “We regret to announce the departure of our vocalist Adam Mercer from AWIP,” they wrote. “We wish him the best in his future endeavors in music and his personal life. There is no negativity between the remaining members and Adam. AWIP will continue.”
They followed up with a slightly more heartfelt message: “We’re beyond grateful to [Adam] for everything he’s brought to AWIP—his passion, talent, and dedication have left a lasting mark on this band and our fans… This isn’t the end of AWIP, just the close of an incredible chapter.”
Mercer hasn’t yet commented publicly, and no replacement vocalist has been named.
AWIP’s last major output was their album Eternity, which saw the band pushing even further into symphonic and blackened territory — balancing breakdowns with atmosphere and carving out space in an increasingly crowded scene. Mercer’s vocal range and theatrical presence were central to that shift, so whoever steps in next will have big expectations to meet.
For now, the band says they’re continuing, but it’s unclear what the next era of A Wake In Providence will sound, or look like. What’s clear is that they’re not folding, and they’re asking fans to stick with them through the transition.
