AC/DC’s promoter says fans can expect an explosive show as their Australian tour kicks off at the MCG tonight.
AC/DC’s promoter says fans should prepare for a thunderous return when the band kicks off their Australian stadium tour in Melbourne tonight.
Speaking at a press conference at the MCG earlier this week (via Rolling Stone Australia), promoter Christo Van Egmond told reporters the band’s soundcheck had already shaken the ground. “They did the soundcheck yesterday, you could feel the building shake. So it’s good! What a rock’n’roll show should be,” he said.
The POWER UP tour marks the first AC/DC run promoted by Van Egmond since the passing of his father, Garry Van Egmond, who had a decades-long history of working with the band.
Van Egmond explained that the Australian leg of AC/DC’s tour had been in planning since early this year, and after seeing several performances overseas, he’s confident local audiences are in for something special. “Then I went to Europe last year and saw one of the first shows for POWER UP – about seven shows in Munich,” he said. “They’ve been on the road, done 60 shows and have performed in front of about 4 million people so far. It’s a well-oiled machine. The show’s just incredible, they are absolutely flying.”
Around 80,000 fans are expected to pack the MCG for both the Wednesday and Sunday night shows before the POWER UP tour continues through Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, and Brisbane across November and December.
Due to overwhelming demand, several additional dates were added to AC/DC’s national run. The tour also features a stacked lineup of Australian rock acts, with Amyl and the Sniffers joining as special guests. Each city will also host a different local opener: The Casanovas in Melbourne, Large Mirage in Sydney, Oscar the Wild in Adelaide, Southern River Band in Perth, and Headsend in Brisbane.
With the MCG already shaking during rehearsals, AC/DC’s return promises to be one of the loudest live shows to hit Australian stadiums this year – although they’re in hot competition with Metallica, who are also blazing their way through the country right now.
