Alkaline Trio have just kicked off their 2024 Australian tour. But for guitarist Matt Skiba, it’s not just about the shows. He’s already planning plenty of time in the water.
“Australia’s waters are perfect for surfing,” Skiba recently told Blunt in an interview. “In California, the sea is freezing, but in Australia, it’s warm. Hawaii and Australia are my two favourite places to surf.”
Skiba fondly recalls his last trip to Australia. “I went surfing with my buddy Greg Teal,” he says. “We even surfed with some of the Green Day guys. The sunset was unreal.” But it wasn’t just a fun day in the surf. Skiba admits it marked a major turning point in his life. “I had the hangover to end all hangovers. That was the last time I got drunk,” he reveals. “It made me rethink everything.”
Beyond the surf, Skiba has made plenty of great memories in Australia. “Australia feels like an alien planet,” he says. “I’ve been skydiving there and in New Zealand, too. It’s a place full of wild experiences.”
The band is currently very excited to be back on Australian shores. As Skiba puts it, “It’s always special being in Australia. The vibe, the people—it’s unforgettable.”
