Chino Moreno has made it abundantly clear: he’s had enough of autograph hunters.
After getting swarmed outside a recent Dallas show of the bands, the Deftones frontman said that he’s “not signing shit no more”.
According to Consequence, Moreno was happy to sign records for fans ahead of Deftones’ March 15 gig. Things took a turn when some showed up with stacks of albums, reportedly as many as 10 each. While he obliged, the sheer volume clearly wore thin.
A video captured the moment Moreno put his foot down. “Go ahead and tell your friends I’m not doing this shit no more,” he told the crowd, calling out online resellers who profit off his signature. “You guys go online in your little groups and shit, tell people I’m not signing shit no more. I signed these right now, but let them know I’m not signing anything.”
Chino’s message to autograph seekers
It’s not the first time an artist has taken issue with professional autograph seekers. Many artists including Billie Eilish and Paul McCartney, have drawn the line at signing stacks of memorabilia meant for resale. One can only imagine that it feels rather insulting to sign items for this purpose. Making the artist feel like a commodity with which they can exploit for financial gains.
The incident happened during Deftones’ North American tour with The Mars Volta, who’ve been opening each night with a set of entirely unreleased material. That tour wraps in April, but Deftones aren’t slowing down. They’ll be back in the US later this year for a summer run with IDLES and Phantogram starting in August.
Beyond that, Deftones are locked in for a Saturday slot at Glastonbury 2025, with additional stops at Primavera Sound Porto, Rock Werchter, and Roskilde. They’ll also return stateside for Louder Than Life and Shaky Knees Festival.
As for whether Moreno sticks to his new no-autographs rule, time will tell. But for now, he’s made his stance crystal clear.
