‘Passover’ returns, front to back

Released in 2006, ‘Passover’ wasn’t chasing trends, it built its own lane through droning riffs, hypnotic repetition, and a sense of unease that felt pulled straight from the desert at midnight.

Now, The Black Angels are set to perform the album in full across Australia and New Zealand, giving fans a rare shot at hearing the record as it was meant to be experienced, with no skips or reshuffle, just the full descent.

It’s a bold move, but it makes sense, ‘Passover’ isn’t a singles record, it’s a slow burn that only really hits when you sit inside it.

A band that shaped the revival

Formed in Austin in 2004, The Black Angels have long been one of the key architects of modern psychedelic rock, you can hear echoes of Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson and The Velvet Underground in their DNA, but they’ve always leaned darker, heavier, and more hypnotic.

Across releases like ‘Death Song’ and ‘Wilderness of Mirrors’, they’ve kept refining that sound without sanding off the edges that made them stand out in the first place.

Their influence stretches beyond records too, with the band founding Austin Psych Fest, now known globally as Levitation, a cornerstone for experimental and psych music worldwide.

Australian return locked in

The 2026 run ties into major festival appearances including VIVID, Open Season and Dark Mofo, alongside the newly added headline dates.

For a band that thrives in atmosphere and immersion, these shows won’t just be nostalgia trips, they’ll be a reminder of how heavy psych can still feel when it’s done right.
