Yungblud is heralding in a new generation of Brit rock enthusiasts, currently sitting atop his perch as one of the biggest artists in the world. It’s only logical then that the old blood of the UK alternative scene, and current titanic heavyweights, Bring Me The Horizon, enlisted him to join forces with them on new single ‘Obey’.
Spun as Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record’ on Radio 1, the track tales the unfortunate truth of our conformity to being reigned over by governments that remain oppressive, to the extent that it’s so deeply entrenched in our DNA that we hardly even flinch at it anymore.
“We consider ourselves free,” Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oli Sykes asserts, “but only because the chains are invisible, and we are controlled in ways we don’t even want to think about. They tell us how to live with a smile on their face, like shit ain’t fucked up, inform us of tragic statistics like it’s nothing…it’s a weird world.”
Bring Me The Horizon tapped Doom and Doom Eternal composer Mick Gordon to lend a hand with production for the single, while Sykes himself directed the video for ‘Obey’ in London. It’s unsurprising that Yungblud has taken part, with the new-gen UK icon having previously collaborated with everyone who’s anyone in music. “We will rise above the hate and the diversion”, he added on the song. “We will fight for the world we want to be a part of. We will not obey.”
We don’t know all that much about the impending release from Bring Me The Horizon, except for the fact that it forms part of the yet-to-be-detailed Posthuman series. The first EP of the project is set to include ‘Obey’ and previous COVID-19 anthem ‘Parasite Eve’. We may have had a shit year, but a few more tunes from Bring Me The Horizon wouldn’t go astray in bringing some light to 2020.
