C.O.F.F.I.N Release Sixth Album 'Out In Oslo', Share New Video For 'Gettin Down' And Full Documentary

Sydney punks C.O.F.F.I.N have officially completed the rollout for their sixth studio album, Out In Oslo.

The veteran Northern Beaches punk-rock band have shared the album today (September 18th) via King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s p(doom) label – marking their first release for the band’s independent imprint.

It follows on from 2023’s Australia Stops, which was nominated for an ARIA Award in the Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album category and saw the band chart in both Australia and the UK for the very first time.

After releasing singles such as ‘Sleep In It’ and ’13 Days’, the band have now also shared a music video for Oslo‘s third single, ‘Gettin Down’. It was directed by lead vocalist and drummer Ben Portnoy, who noted in a press statement that the song’s title has a double meaning – both in the partying sense and the sad, emotional sense.

“I wrote the lyrics for one morning outside on a bench,” Portnoy said. “I was feeling particularly disturbed by the prospect of organising party plans for the weekend while people in Palestine were experiencing genocide.

“The whole thing just feels so weird and depressing, and hopeless. The world does just go on around it… I guess that’s just how it goes; the day-to-day doesn’t stop for those who aren’t directly affected.”

Speaking on the creation of the video, which was filmed around the band’s native Sydney, Portnoy noted that he was inspired by “music videos whose subject matter is mismatched or contrasted with the mood of the song”.

“It was my hope here to promote a pondering of that by having a fun party night out, as the visuals for a song essentially about being disengaged and distressed with the state of the world,” he said.

In conjunction with the release of Out in Oslo and the new music video, C.O.F.F.I.N have also shared their full feature-length documentary 10,000 Miles from Oslo for free on YouTube.

The documentary, covering the band’s unexpected 21-year career, has been shown at several sold-out screenings nationally – including one as recently as ealier this month at Melbourne’s Brunswick Picture House.

Next month will see the band performing at King Gizzard’s Croxton Block Party, a curated two-day event held in the carpark of the Croxton Bandroom in Melbourne on October 17th and 18th.

They will then open for Foo Fighters on the Newcastle date of their ‘Take Cover’ national tour in November, alongside fellow Sydney band Downgirl, before undertaking their own headlining tour next March.
