Calvin Harris Sets World Record With 1.6 Million-Person DJ Set

Calvin Harris has officially entered the Guinness World Records books after drawing an estimated 1.6 million people to a single DJ set in Brazil.

Calvin Harris has added a particularly enormous milestone to his career, officially securing the Guinness World Records title for the largest attendance for a DJ set by a single artist (per Billboard).

The Scottish DJ and producer earned the record for his performance in São Paulo, Brazil on February 8th, where an estimated 1.6 million people packed into the city for the set.

Harris performed from a float on Rua da Consolação, effectively turning the surrounding streets into a giant dancefloor.

His set pulled heavily from a catalogue that has dominated clubs and radio for nearly two decades, including ‘This Is What You Came For’, ‘One Kiss’, ‘I Need Your Love’ and ‘We Found Love’.

Harris also got into the local spirit for the occasion, performing in a Brazilian football shirt bearing the name “Calvinho” and the number 00.

Guinness World Records has now formally recognised the performance, with Harris receiving a certificate marking the achievement.

“Calvin Harris has spent years creating music that brings people together, so to see that reflected on this scale is really quite remarkable,” Guinness World Records adjudicator Will Munford said.

“An estimated 1.6 million people came out to be part of his performance in São Paulo, which is an extraordinary achievement and a testament to the global reach of his music.”

It’s not Harris’ first encounter with Guinness World Records. In 2013, his album 18 Months earned him recognition for landing nine UK Top 10 singles from one album, surpassing a benchmark previously held by Michael Jackson.

The latest record arrives more than 15 years into Harris’ run as one of dance music’s biggest commercial forces.

Born Adam Wiles, Harris has accumulated 11 UK No. 1 singles, while his catalogue has now generated more than 56 billion combined streams, according to figures supplied alongside the new record announcement.

Not bad for a night out.
