Dave Grohl Says He Broke Down In Tears After Playing With AC/DC

Share

Dave Grohl has revealed that performing with AC/DC left him sobbing backstage, with the admission arriving as Foo Fighters begin their Australian tour in Brisbane tonight.

Speaking with Rog from New Zealand radio station The Rock, Grohl recalled joining AC/DC for ‘Highway To Hell’ at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on October 2nd. His wife watched from the side of the stage, but it was after the performance that the experience really hit him.

“I walked off stage and I broke down in tears, sobbing like a baby,” he said, as transcribed by Blabbermouth.

Foo Fighters had opened the show before Grohl returned to play guitar and sing backing vocals with AC/DC. His conversation with The Rock reveals how much it meant once he stepped away from the microphone.

The invitation to support AC/DC came through The Pretty Reckless singer Taylor Momsen, who contacted Grohl when her band couldn’t make a show. Foo Fighters filled in twice, with the second date giving him the chance to join the headliners, he also described AC/DC’s stage as louder than anything he had experienced, including Motörhead.

Grohl traced his love of the band back to seeing Let There Be Rock at 11. Watching the musicians push themselves to exhaustion changed his idea of what a rock show could be, and the physical commitment of that performance stayed with him as he became a musician himself.

Foo Fighters’ Australian Tour Starts Tonight

That influence is timely for Australian fans, with Foo Fighters opening their local Take Cover tour at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium tonight, Thursday, November 5th. Full Flower Moon Band and Mini Skirt join the opening bill.

The November run continues through Townsville, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Adelaide, including an additional Melbourne appearance at Crown Live. Perth follows on January 25th, 2027, after two New Zealand shows.

Supports change across the tour, with The Belair Lip Bombs, The Buoys, C.O.F.F.I.N and The Southern River Band among the acts joining different dates. Full dates and ticket links are below.
