Sydney’s Deficit have teamed up with UNITYTX’s Jay Webster for their new single ‘FYA’, “an anthem for the art of saying nothing.”
Sydney heavy hitters Deficit have returned with a new single, ‘FYA’, this time linking up with Jay Webster from Texas rap-metal crew UNITYTX. The track plays to the strengths of both bands, pulling together Deficit’s metallic hardcore roots with UNITYTX’s sharpened rap-metal edge.
In their own words, Deficit call the track a tongue-in-cheek hit at bands who take themselves a little too seriously. “We notice a lot of bands spend so much time and energy taking themselves so seriously without actually having anything to say or any real experience to draw from.”
So as a tongue-in-cheek jab, we wrote a track with deliberately nonsensical lyrics laden with over-the-top angst and a barrage of expletives. Lyrically it’s how these artists come across to us. Musically it made sense to flex our chops a little and pair it with a pure metal track that is harder and faster than a lot of what we see out there. To sum it up – it’s an anthem for the art of saying nothing.”

Deficit’s rise through Australia’s heavy scene has been steady and uncompromising. Across four EPs and millions of streams, Deficit – Nathan Newman, Macleane Ryan, Michael Campbell, Blake Fry and Zak Borg – have built a reputation for heavy, boundary-pushing music and a live show that holds its own on any lineup.
They’ve toured with acts including Ocean Sleeper, Lil Lotus, Alpha Wolf, Malevolence, UNITYTX, Prompts, and Diamond Construct, adding to a resume that has put them firmly on the radar both locally and abroad.
While ‘FYA’ is the first taste of what’s next, Deficit are already signalling a deeper dive into darker territory. Pulling from 90s metal, nu-metal, hardcore and industrial, their upcoming work promises more grit and less gloss, staying true to the rage (whether that’s at angry bands with not much to say or otherwise) at the heart of their sound.
‘FYA’, featuring Jay Webster of UNITYTX, is out now and streaming everywhere.
