Deftones Drop ‘My Mind Is A Mountain’ Video And It Hits

Share

Deftones are back and they’ve brought the weight with them.

Their new single ‘my mind is a mountain’ dropped last week and now there’s a video to match. It’s a bare-room performance. No tricks. No narrative. Just Chino Moreno staring down the mic like it owes him money while the band slams through one of their heaviest choruses in years.

This is the first proper taste of their new album ‘private music’ and it already feels like they’ve stopped caring what people expect from them. The sound is thick. The drums are a bit caveman. It’s aggressive without being messy and cinematic without losing punch. Chino sounds like he’s mid-exorcism one minute and whispering a secret the next.

The video starts in black and white, the band lit like a threat. By the end there are flashes of red bleeding through. It’s not subtle. But it’s also just not supposed to be. It’s a reminder that after five years of relative silence, Deftones still know how to deliver.

The album drops on August 22 through Reprise. It’s their first since 2020’s ‘Ohms’ and they’re clearly done warming up. A UK and Europe tour kicks off January with stops in Paris, Berlin, Manchester and a headline at London’s O2. Denzel Curry and Drug Church are tagging along which means the undercard hits just as hard.

Before that they’re hitting North America with Phantogram, IDLES and The Barbarians Of California. Tickets go on sale July 18 and if you’ve got a brain, you’ll be moving early to that one of course.

‘private music’ has been teased and delayed for two years. Now the wait’s nearly over and if this track is the floor level, it’s going to be a long climb to the ceiling. Deftones came back to remind everyone how of it’s done.
